Homemade Pizzas

Hi, my name is Rachel, and I've never made homemade pizza with my children!

... until NOW!

This is nothing amazing here, because I feel like this is something everyone has done with their kids.  Well, not me before now.. and boy, was it fun!  I happened to have all of the ingredients we needed on hand, which was a bonus.  The kids LOVED being able to make their own pizza.  

We mixed up the pizza crust dough together, and let it raise for about 10 minutes.  I gave each child dough and they each used their own technique to flatten their crust.  Charlotte wanted to try throwing hers in the air.  Wesley and Tatum used the smash technique.

I suggested they make a unique shape for their pizza, which they got a kick out of.  Charlotte went with a heart, Tatum chose a turtle and Wesley, a bear.

When their crust was finished, we placed them on a baking sheet dusted with corn meal.  Charlotte came up with the idea of using a fork to score around the edges of the crust.  Tatum and Wes liked that idea too.

We had pre-made pizza sauce on hand, which made it quick and easy.  I added it to each crust and let the kids spread it out.  Afterwards, I wished I had added more sauce then you see above... just not quite enough!

Next, the kids sprinkled cheese on top to their liking.  We used mozzarella and a little bit of cheddar shred.  Using the pre-shredded cheese was another big time-saver.

We didn't happen to have any pepperoni on hand, so the kids just left their pizzas at that.  We baked them, and voila!

A yummy supper, the kids got to make themselves!

The pizza was good, though the crust wasn't my favorite.  I would suggest trying a couple pizza dough recipes to find your favorite if you don't already have one.  Anyone got a favorite dough recipe to share??

  1. We love making "personal" pizzas here too. I've never been brave enough to make my own dough from scratch, but we love the pizza dough from Trader Joe's. It's inexpensive and really yummy.

  2. Yum! Isn't it fun?! Our virtual vacation is in Italy this week and we did our pizzas today too! We did them for lunch!

  3. I have been using a recipe from Martha Stewart for many years and it has always worked out well for us whether we are grilling or baking in the oven. The kids love make your own pizza nights. I have even done them with refrigerated biscuit dough for a quick and easy movie night dinner. We just roll the biscuit dough out thin and they shape them a bit to personalize.

    Here is the MS recipe if you'd like to try it:
    1/4 tsp sugar
    1 TBL dry yeast
    1 cup warm water (110 degrees)
    2 3/4 - 3 1/4 cups flour
    1 tsp salt
    1 1/2 TBL olive oil - plus enough to oil bowl

    Dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water in small bowl. Let stand until foamy, about 5 mins.
    Combine flour and salt in mixing bowl. Add oil and yeast mixture. Mix until well combined, add more flour as needed to make a smooth, not tacky dough. Turn onto floured board and knead 4-5 times. Let rise in oiled bowl 40 minutes until doubled. Punch down and fold 4-5 times. Cover with plastic and let rise again about 30 minutes. Divide into portion size balls and roll on floured board. Stretch by hand until thin.

  4. Looks like the kids had so much fun! we often make pizzas at home and another yummy option for the bases is lebanese flat bread. It is thin and crisps up nicely!

  5. Looks like you all had a blast! We love making pizza together in our home, too. When my nieces and nephews come to visit- guess what they love to do....make their own pizzas. Ya'll enjoy!

  6. We have family pizza night on Fridays, and the
    kids love it! This is our favorite dough recipe.

    2 cups warm water
    4 cups whole wheat flour
    2 1/2 TBL yeast
    2 1/2 TBL sugar
    1 TBL salt

    Combine all of the ingredients in your mixer. Once they are well combined add additional flour a tablespoon at a time, if necessary, until the dough pulls away from the bowl. Allow it to continue kneading in the bowl for about five minutes. Once it is smooth and elastic it is ready to be rolled out.

    You can do this all by hand, it will just take a little longer. It makes two 16" pizzas, or it will fill my jelly roll pan nicely, with enough extra dough to make cheese sticks. Sometimes we add some basil, or oregano to the crust. It also makes a great calzone dough, and makes two LARGE calzones.
