Chocolate Butterfly Cake

Happy Birthday Charlotte
Today my sweet little girl turns 9 years old!

I had seen THESE adorable chocolate butterflies to decorate cupcakes on Pinterest a while back, and was eager to give them a try.  I am so glad I did.  They really weren't that difficult to make, and made a beautiful cake for my little girl!

To be honest, as I was making the actual cake itself, I was thinking it was going to look like a hot mess when it was complete.  I went simple... I used two boxes of mix.  The bottom layer was a vanilla cake baked in a larger, spring form pan.  The top was chocolate cake baked in two 8" round pans.  All layered together with frosting tinted pink, and covered with plain, white frosting.

I followed the instructions shared at No Empty Chairs to create the butterflies.
A great tutorial, so I'm not going to recreate it here.  Be sure to check out the link!

I drew a simple butterfly wing template myself.  I also found that mixing a couple colors on the wings created stunning results!

Different from the tutorial at No Empty Chairs, I skipped the antenna, and I did not create the body before putting the butterflies together.

I also found it helpful to take chunks of foil, rolling the sides to make a special "tray" for the butterflies to prop up the wings in place while the chocolate sets, as you can see in the photo below.  Much easier than scouring the kitchen for objects that are right for the job!

I squirted a thick line of chocolate for each butterfly body in the center, and placed the wings into the chocolate.  Set aside until completely dry!  I found that with time they set nicely, and didn't need to be placed in the fridge.

I also used some chocolate to spell out "Happy Birthday Charlotte" on wax paper, allowed it to set, and later placed on top of the cake.  Thought I might as well make a chocolate "9" too :)

I purchased dry frosting roses to dress it up the cake.

Then just before lighting the candles, I placed the pretty butterflies around the cake.  I'm not sure why I was so worried it would look cluttered and awful once I did.  haha... because I think it really did turn out beautiful!

The kids were so excited about the cake.  I loved it!

Happy Birthday Charlotte!
