Summer Link Party

Welcome to the Party!

Hello!  Thanks for stopping by!!!  I am trying to keep my head above water right now.  It will be a very busy summer for us, as we are moving back to the US from China.  With the crazy rush of the end of school, preparing for our move, and the time we will need to settle in, I'm thinking it is best that I take a break from my blog in order to give my family all of the energy I have.  I expect to be back with a bang this fall.  In the meantime, I will keep this open as a Summer Link Party.  It will run through Labor Day.  Feel free to come back as often as you like to share the great things you are doing.  Let's make this the best party yet!!

And... if you haven't done so, be sure to stop by and check out my Summer Program!

For the Kids Friday #164

Welcome to the Party!

Let me start by wishing all of you moms a very Happy Mother's Day!!  I hope your weekend is a very special one!  XOXO

I hope you are having a great week!  I am thrilled to have you here, and excited to share with you a little of what my family was up to last week.  So I hope you don't mind me skipping on the features this week!

We had the Labor Day holiday in China last week, so we decided to do a little traveling within China. We visited the city of Datong, which is about a 5 hour drive west of Beijing.  We traveled by car with some other expat friends from the US, who also have three kids.  It would have been fun to take an over-night train there, but we didn't plan well enough ahead of time for that.  Luckily, we managed to get a big van to fit us all comfortably.  Together, we all had a great time!

We first visited the Hengshan Hanging Temple, seen in the photo below. This temple, or monastery, was built 1500 years ago!  It is actually built on the side of a cliff. Inside this temple are several little shrines for worship. You walk along the path leading you from one to the next. It doesn't look too intimidating to walk through until you are actually up there... and then, it is pretty scary!

Notice the lady in blue, in the photo below... the railings never came any higher than this on an adult, and many narrow walkways.  Ack!!!  Even if you aren't afraid of heights, walking through this temple with children was enough to give you a heart attack!  However, it is beautiful, and it is quite amazing to see something so old.  It was a great experience!

In Datong, there are a few of these beautiful, ceramic dragon walls.  This one below is called the Five Dragon Screen.  We visited this as well as the Nine Dragon Screen.  These walls are only (haha) about 500 years old.  The colors in person are really amazing. I have been told there is one of these walls in Beijing, so I am thinking we will be on the hunt for this one as well.

My favorite part of our trip was a visit to the Yungang Grottoes. The grottoes are within a beautiful and well maintained park, that has obviously been a huge tourism focus in recent years.  The grounds include some amazing sculptures, beautiful temples, traditional Chinese buildings and architecture, and many places for worship.  The parks lead you to the caverns where you will find literally thousands of Buddhas that have been carved there in the stone, more than 1500 years ago! There are several giant Buddhas, like the one in the photo below.  You can see the children in the photo to appreciate the size... and this is NOT the largest!

We spent half a day at this beautiful park. It was definitely a place I will always remember. Simply amazing! I feel so very fortunate to have had the chance to see it, and even more fortunate that I was able to share it with my children!

Only 56 more sleeps in China for our family. It is hard to believe the time has gone by so fast!!

Thanks for letting me share with you.  Now I am excited to see what YOU have to share with us! Thanks for being here, and to those of you who have been stopping by to share for a long time.  I love you all!  XOXO
